Once I restarted it saw the phone and files transferred.> Ever wish you could manage your iPod with something other than iTunes or from any computer you want? I'm Tom Merritt from. I then plugged it back into my ubuntu machine and loaded Rhythmbox by right clicking on my phone icon and "open with" Rhythmbox (which seems to be the only way it sees the phone.) Rhythmbox asked me to initialize my phone, I ignored it and restarted Rhythmbox. After that process I initialized the iPhone through iTunes. I saved the iTunesDB file to my home directory as a backup then deleted the file from the iTunes folder. I went to the iTunes folder that is inside the iTunes_control folder. I plugged the iPhone back into my ubuntu box and opened the file browser. After some searching I found the fix for that was this: itunes didn't recognize the iphone and only gave me the option to restore it, which I didn't want to do since it is a pain to jailbreak. I then plugged it in to my windows machine and started up itunes. When I right clicked on the icon and clicked on properties Rhythmbox would crash. After that Rhythmbox saw the iPhone but nothing would happen when I dragged files over, whether they were m4a files or mp3s. Since it was a fresh install I thought I had to do this. When I opened Rhythmbox it asked to initialize the iPhone. I was able to see the iPhone on my desktop. The first thing I did after jailbreaking and updating Cydia was connect it to my computer. This worked for me but try at your own risk and only if you don't want to save the music on your iPhone. I think there was a problem when Rhythmbox initialized the iPhone, maybe I didn't even need to initialize it. Ok, I had the same problem (Rhythmbox saw my Iphone but it would not transfer files) and I was able to get it working.
